Let’s realize something about the amazing God we serve. He could have made the decision that the only way he would speak to us was by dropping visual images into our minds, like photographs to describe what He wanted us to know and do. The truth is, God does speak to us through visual images, even through the beautiful nature around us. With that being said, God has chosen primarily to talk to us and make Himself known to us through preaching at church.
Paul wrote the following:
“For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God; it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe” (1 Corinthians 1:21).
Did you know that some of Paul’s most emphatic words to Timothy were, “Preach the Word!” (2 Timothy 4:2)?
Let’s continue to look at this another way. Remember when Paul preached on Mars Hill? Because of the setting of Mars Hill, he could have used drama to make his points. This was the birthplace of drama, it all started there in Greece. Paul could have gathered a theater troupe and presented his message in “three acts.” However, we know that he didn’t do that, instead, he preached to them.
To know me is to know I am all about worship, even drama, and the arts. My past dozen Saturday morning blogs through email have been all about the importance of worship. (You can read all the blogs on our website here). These three elements have their place, but they are nowhere near the importance of the preaching and teaching of the Word of God.
During the time of the early Church, they certainly placed a premium on the singing of praise and worship songs. Now you are about to read something vital:
We must be careful not to “WORSHIP” worship!
I know, and you know that worship has its place, but preaching and teaching still need to be the priority of the Church today. Why? Because the Bible says it is.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been as long as it has, but I’ve had the incredible privilege of preaching and teaching God’s Word for more than 30 years in many places. Those places range from Africa to Central America, churches to schools, from small home Bible studies to coffee shops. Without any doubt, I can say this with all boldness! It is God’s Word preached that touches lives.
